Keeping Pets Safe on the 4th!

HI Everyone! I hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July! Now, here are some thoughts about the 4th and keeping your pet safe! Did you know that more pets are lost on July 4th than any other day? July 5th is the busiest day of the year for shelters. But there are things you can do to keep your dog safe on the 4th. It is important to have identification tags on your pet – or better yet, have them microchipped. If your pet is microchipped it is important to ensure that th...e contact information is always current. You also want to ensure that your pet has a safe and secure environment. What if your neighbors are setting off fireworks? Is your yard secure enough to keep your dog contained? It is important to evaluate your options and choose the safest place for your pet. Sometimes the safest place is in quiet room or a secure crate – inside. If at all possible, leave your pet at home during 4th of July celebrations if you are planning to attend fireworks. I took Ella with me to a local fireworks display last year, and she was really spooked by the loud noises. Unfamiliar places, crowds, and loud noises can frighten your dog resulting in them becoming spooked and running off. Keep your dog inside if your neighbors are setting off fireworks. Keep sparklers, glow sticks, fireworks, charcoal, and kabob skewers away from curious pets. Too much sun and heat can be dangerous as well. Keep pets inside when it is extremely hot or humid. If they are outdoors make sure they have access to shady spots and a good supply of water. Don’t leave them outside for extended periods of time and know the signs that your pet may be overheating. NEVER leave your dog in the car! After the celebration, check your yard for debris before allowing your pet outside. Even if you did not set off any fireworks, it is possible that debris a neighbors can make its way to your yard where a curious dog might find it. Thanks everyone!
