DogaBetix Ingredients - Why I Chose the Chia Seed!

As you may have noticed, I decided to eliminate any flours from my recipes, and have replaced it as the binder for the treats with Chia seeds. Several of you have inquired as to why I made the switch, so I decided to write a short blog to better explain the reasons why I changed ingredients.
Often when we take a grain and make it into flour, it changes the carb and fiber content. So what tend to happen for our diabetic dogs is that most types of flours will make their blood sugar spike like wild fire. During the manufacturing process, most flours are stripped of fiber and other nutrients. This makes white flour very light and fine and great for baking, but it also means that the carbohydrates in flour are digested and absorbed more quickly into the blood stream. For our diabetic pups, this can cause a spike in their blood sugar levels.
So I decided to research a substitute for the flour, and found out all about the power of the Chia seed! Most of us hear about the Chia seed around the holidays, when the commercials come out for the “Ch-ch-ch- Chia Pet!” But did you know that the Chia seed was domesticated way back in 2600 B.C. when it was cultivated by the Mayans and Aztecs and was one of the main food of their diet, and was used by Aztec warriors and runners to give them abundant energy and endurance.
These little seeds pack quite the punch! They are 5 times more calcium-rich than milk, contain 2 times more potassium than bananas, they are 3 times more iron-rich than spinach, 3 times more anti-oxidant- rich than blueberries, and have 2 times more protein than any other seeds! What’s more, Chia seeds are gluten free, non-gmo, and DogaBetix uses only organic Chia seeds. Through these little tiny Chia seeds, you’ll find large quantities of protein, Omega oils 3 and 6, ( Chia has 3 times the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids as Salmon!) Omega-3 is important to balance out Omega-6 fatty acids and helps promote healthy skin, coats, joints, immune system, as well as brain and eye development and maintenance. Chia is non-allergenic and an excellent source of phosphorous, potassium, copper, iron, and zinc.
So how does the Chia seed effect our diabetic dogs? Chia can absorb 10 times its own weight in water and generates a gel which can be consumed. It is this gel that is now used in all of the DogaBetix treats! The gel slows the conversion of carbs into sugars. Stable blood sugar levels contribute to naturally high levels of energy. By doing so, Chia supports normal insulin function and sensitivity, blood sugar regulation, and glucose tolerance.
